Le cuivre se retrouve naturellement dans l'environnement. Le cuivre sous forme ionique est fortement adsorbé sur les particules de sol. Il est immobile et ne contamine pas l'eau souterraine. Sous forme de particules colloïdales provenant de l'érosion des sols, il est très susceptible de contaminer l'eau de surface par ruissellement. Dans l'eau, il peut exister sous de nombreuses formes (complexes organiques, inorganiques) et possède deux états d'oxydation, cuivreux et cuivrique (Cu+ et Cu2+).
